Jesus said to his disciples:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” (John 15:5-8)
We’ve been encouraging everyone here at Valley Church to pray this prayer during September:
“Father, I want all my life to be lived all through Christ.”
I’m not much of a gardener, but I do know that if a branch gets cut off from the vine, it’s not going to bear any fruit. It’s just going to wither away and die.
On the other side, Jesus promises us that if we remain or abide in him, we will bear “much fruit.” When we keep vitally and personally connected to Jesus all day long, we see the fruit of that relationship in countless ways. Relationships are strengthened. The needy are cared for. Our faith is shared. People come to know Christ.
A lot of Christians never really think about just how much fruit that their lives could bear. Can you dream a little? Can you see the potential of “much fruit”? Can you prayerfully imagine how your life, your relationships, your family, your community, and your world could be transformed because of the ripple effect of your life? It can happen. Not because you are great, but because Jesus is faithful. He said, “remain in me and you will bear much fruit.” What a promise!
When we stay close to Jesus, pray to him, walk with him, and really live in him, there’s no limit to the impact that he could make through us.
So, why settle for surviving, when you could be thriving? Live all your life all through Christ, and get ready to see how God works.
